Amazon has opted not to bring back Good Girls Revolt after only one season. The period drama was well received by both audiences and critics, so for it to get cancelled is surprising. About the only good news to come out of this is that the series is being shopped to other networks, and one of them will no doubt pick up the show.
Good Girls Revolt launched and won over a lot of people with its sharp wit and heart pulling drama. A lot of Amazons female viewers tuned into the show, making it one of the most watched shows by that demographic. The majority of the shows viewers were female, and that in itself is a good thing for marketing. And the show is set in the past but has a lot of modern plotlines, namely gender equality.
The quick pivot by Amazon is most likely due to getting a lot of contracts done with big name stars behind the production. It seems they would rather shift to this new format and make it a haven for celebrities and their side projects rather than focusing on in-house original content. There is a market for Woody Allen’s Crisis in Six Scenes, but there is nowhere near the staying power behind any of these star approved series. In just a few weeks, Amazon has invested over $230 million dollars in series backed by stars like Robert de Niro, Julianne Moore and Matt Weiner.
With the way both Hulu and Netflix original programming has taken off, for Amazon to go away from that trend makes no sense. If they intend on innovating, then cancelling a great series like Good Girls Revolt is a bad start.
What do you think about the cancellation of the series after one year? Will any of their other series be next?
