Oxygen Media has greenlighted Unprotected, a new doc-comedy series about a family trying to restart their lives after leaving the Witness Protection Program. Viewers will be watching the Cantarellas, a family with two teenagers, as they try to settle into the suburban, retiree, lifestyle in their new hometown of Scottsdale, AZ. Over the course of the season, viewers will see them adapting to these foreign surroundings and trying to reform their old ways, without changing their personalities or who they are. From running a “legit” family business to trying to befriend their new neighbors, #Unprotected promises to be a hilarious look at a family trying to adapt.

Rod Aissa, Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development at Oxygen Media, explains that @Unprotected promises to be “the ultimate fish out of water comedy series that’s like nothing else on television.” #Unprotected will be produced by Propagate with Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Kevin Healey and Eric Kutner serving as executive producers.

In many ways, the model for @Unprotected is trying to take what has been proven to work and applying it to a new concept. The doc-comedy, also known as the mockumentary, format has become one of the new favorite sitcom styles out there, as can be seen in hit shows like The Office or Modern Family. Unprotected trying to do the same may seem a bit derivative, but the move makes sense when you consider that there isn’t anything like that on Oxygen. In this case, what seems to be a weak move comes across as more of an attempt to diversify the channel’s women-friendly programming with a format that is proven to be a success.

Interestingly enough, the premise in and of itself doesn’t appear to appeal specifically to a female audience, though granted, we don’t know enough details about the show to confirm this one way or the other. For all we know, the show may be based around a matriarchal figure, which may fall into line with what would be expected. However, if this isn’t the case, could we see Oxygen trying to branch out more? The network is already #1 among ad-supported cable entertainment networks in the females aged 18-34 demographic, making it the youngest women’s network on Tuesdays in primetime. This is a strong base, but every network wants to grow, and Unprotected may serve as testing the waters in that regard.

Of course, being a mockumentary in and of itself is far from a guarantee that Unprotected will be successful. This will depend on the state of the cast and writing. While the premise is novel, we will need to hear more information as production continues before we can speculate

on how well it will work.

Having only gotten the recent greenlight to enter production, it’s likely we won’t hear about a premiere date or even cast info for Unprotected for a quite a bit of time. Luckily, we are also the best place to keep you posted on these facts as they come out. Fill out the form on this page to become a subscriber, getting info on the show with automatic emails from us.
