With Channel 4 stealing The Great British Bake Off from the BBC, they may end up having the last laugh as they are trying to poach Paul Hollywood from Channel 4! This is a very big deal, and makes Paul the hottest free agent in British television. Channel 4 has offered him in excess of 1 million pounds per year, but is that enough?
It’s already been discussed how taking the Channel 4 deal could make him look like a hypocrite. And if his partner Mary Berry isn’t coming back then he will most likely decline anyway. He will be directly replacing Chris Evans, who at this point is the biggest hosting disaster in Top Gear history. There is also a bit of leverage at play here, since showing interesting in Top Gear could land Paul an even larger deal over at Channel 4.
The Great British Bake Off has already officially lost Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, and with Berry and Hollywood on the edge Channel 4 is facing a network disaster. They would have essentially paid 75 million pounds for the right to the name of the show, and nothing else!
And it isn’t like the BBC is doing this lightly, like all Top Gear hosts Paul is a huge fan of cars, and it is almost as big a deal to him as cooking. When not presenting for his signature show he spends time as an amateur sports car racer, and is a former competitor at Le Mans. There was also his one off hosting duties for the Aston Martin themed Licence to Thrill, which got great ratings. Paul has what it takes to host Top Gear, so will Channel 4 let him get away?
What is the max Channel 4 should offer Hollywood to stay? Will he take the job at Top Gear if Berry doesn’t sign on?
