A Fourth season of Drama series The Haves and the Have Nots aired on January 3, 2017

S4 Started January 3, 2017

If you live in the 21st century and have access to the internet, then its almost impossible that you won’t have heard the name Tyler Perry banded about at some point. If you were to look up the word prolific in the dictionary, it is entirely likely that you would see a picture of his face staring back at you – he is the very definition of prolific. The American actor, producer, director, screenwriter, playwright, author, and songwriter has starred in countless films, written numerous stage plays, and created and directed many successful television shows, including Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. He has garnered a host of success for his efforts, and in 2011 was named the highest paid man in entertainment by Forbes magazine, having earned over $130 million USD in one year.

One of his more successful entries in the television market is based on one of his plays The Haves and the Have Nots. The television show is the first scripted show to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), and premiered on Tuesday May 28th 2013, with two back-to-back hour-long episodes. It has gone on to become the channels most popular series, which Variety described as “soapy fun, filled with the typical betrayals, affairs, [and] manipulations” that you would expect from a show of its nature.

So what exactly is this latest Tyler Perry entry about? Well somewhat similar to popular 70’s television show Upstairs Downstairs, the show follows the lives and dynamics between the wealthy Cryer family, the Harrington family, and the hired staff whose job it is to make sure their lives are surrounded in comfort and opulence. The show is all about scandal, and as such fills the screen with characters who are larger than life, like Veronica (Angela Robinson, Law and Order) – a villainous matriarch, who has so far tried to burn her husband alive and blackmailed her son for being homosexual. (Clearly overdue a mother of the year award). The show is also notable for tackling very serious themes such as cancer, drug abuse, rape, suicide, abortion, mental health and religion. Among the serious issues that have been tackled on the program to date have included, and like Veronica, almost all of the main characters are renowned for being devious and otherwise immoral. Beyond the questionable morals of the characters, the show is also notable for being very culturally and socially diverse, and as Angela Robison stated “is one of the only shows on television with a diverse cast that looks like America: Black, White Latino, straight, gay, rich, and poor.”

The show certainly contains enough scandal to be popular among audiences, but it all comes down to how well it’s performed and whether we can expect to see Tyler Perry’s band of sociopathic misfits return to our televisions for a seventh outing. Well, series ratings for the show have been exceptional, with the series setting a ratings record on OWN, with the highest ratings for a series premier and highest overall ratings. It also beat other shows to the top of the ladder on the night it aired, being number one among all cable shows. The second season averaged a 0.93 rating among the 18-49 demographic with 3.12 million viewers tuning in. Impressive stuff. In terms of review feedback, things are not quite so rosy, with the show only managing to reach a 6.1 score on IMDB out of 1856 reviews. However, that isn’t a huge cause for concern as many of Tyler Perry’s films and television shows often get harsh feedback, but still go on to become immensely popular. Add to the fact that OWN has already renewed the show many times, and the storylines show no sign of slowing down, and we think it is fairly safe to assume that the show will make a return in 2017.
