‘The Big Bang Theory’ Has Finally Cast Leonard’s Father – And It Might Just Be Perfect!

One of the long running wishes that many fans of The Big Bang Theory share is to finally get the chance to meet Leonard Hofstafter’s errant father! Now that dream is becoming reality and the series could not have made a better choice in their casting! Two time Emmy winner Juss Hirsch has just been cast to join the series as Leonard’s father. It seems only fitting considering his mother is an Emmy winner too – Dr Beverly Hofstadter is played by Christine Baranski!

At the recent PaleyFest panel for the show, actor Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard, explained that he actually invited Judd Hirsch to take the role after meeting him at the recent tribute to James Burrows. Galecki described how he actually watched Taxi to prepare for the role of Leonard, not because he wanted to based Leonard on Hirsch’s character, but because he felt that both characters served a similar role within their respective groups – the voice of reason despite being just as confused as everyone else! Hirsch has had a long and colourful career including his breakout role in Taxi and appearances in Dear John, Damages, Forever, Numb3rs, The Goldbergs and Maron.

Leonard’s father has always been something of a mystery until fairly recently. What we know so far is that he is apparently an anthropologist who once worked alongside the famous Dr. Louis Leakey and he has never been particularly affectionate towards his son. He and Leonard’s mother divorced following his affair with a waitress.
