Attack on Titan is an anime series based on the manga series of the same name by Hajime Isayama.
Attack on Titan takes place on a world defined by the protection humanity must build for itself to escape the Titans. These Titans are gigantic, human-like creatures who destroy buildings to get at humans who they devour for seemingly no reason.
The main story follows a trio of teens who vow revenge on the Titans when one breaks through the wall surrounding their home town and destroys it along with their families. Having lost everything, Eren, his adopted sister Mikasa, and their friend Armin join the Scout Regiment, an elite group of soldiers who take the fight to the Titans.
The series has gained wide critical acclaim and won several Newtype Anime Awards, including Best Director, Best Script, Best Soundtrack, and others, as well as Best TV Animation from the Animation Kobe Awards. Viewers have found political allegory, ageist themes, and other philosophical ideas buried in the military action series.
A few critics didn’t care for the adaptation, claiming that the story received less attention than the gore and shocking visuals. Overall, this was a minority opinion, but one that came up often.
If you’re already a fan of Japanese animation, then you’ve probably already seen Attack on Titan. If you’re looking for a nigh universally lauded example of the genre to see if you’re interested and enjoy science fiction military stories, then Attack on Titan will be a perfect first series.
