Archer is an American adult animated series created by Adam Reed (Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021).
Sterling Archer is the top intelligence operative in the ISIS (International Secret Intelligence Service) organization, but he doesn’t bring much intelligence to the table. As a secret agent, Archer is second to none. As a human being, he’s a giant mess. He has a tenuous relationship with a fellow agent who is also his ex-girlfriend. His mother issues rise to the surface constantly since she’s the head of the organization for which he spies. And all that’s before the operatives have to start a drug cartel to finance their retirements.
The absurdist humor of the series touches everything from sending up of the super spy genre, gender roles, office politics, to familial relationships. The one liners are fast and the situations ridiculous, but Archer always has a gadget and quip for the occasion…except when he doesn’t.
Critical acclaim for Archer has been almost universally positive. Critics love that it plays on the post 9/11 paranoia that our government’s intelligence services might not actually be all that smart. The series has been nominated for several awards including a number of Primetime Emmys.
If you enjoy James Bond or, more importantly, making fun of James Bond with absurdist humor and over the top plots, then Archer is a sure win for you.
