Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a superhero espionage thriller with deep ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe of Iron Man, Captain America, and the Avengers. Created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, the show centers on a team of agents for the fictional peacekeeping agency that operates in a world of superheroes, godlike aliens, and super science.
After the events of the first Avengers movie, the supposedly mortally wounded Agent Phil Coulson is deemed healthy and put in charge of a team of agents. Over time, the ragtag group of agents, illegal hackers, and super scientists must learn to put aside their secrets and differences so as to work together against the unique challenges of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The series has seen many massive status quo changes since it ties in to closely with the movies and other series of the MCU. The team has fought against HYDRA and, eventually, run up against the Inhumans.
The show’s deep ties to a much larger superhero universe keep the fanboy audience happy. Despite this inclusion into a larger narrative, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. keeps a fast storytelling clip and remains character driven, which is a plus for the more casual audience member.
