Mentalism in Victorian England.

Murder. Mayhem. Chaos. London! Ripper Street represents the worst of the worst of the Victorian Era in England. Whatever caused such gruesome crimes to be committed, we may never know, but there continues to be a deep fascination with the minds of killers to this day.

Series 5 will most definitely, absolutely, be the final series. The showrunners are finishing the story and not allowing it to reach the 1900s. This wildly popular serial killer series has been slowly falling in viewership since its inception, so it’s natural to end it on a high note. Let’s take a look at the show’s historical data and synopses by series.

Series 1 premiered on December 30, 2012, and 7.89 million viewers time-traveled to the year 1889 to see the first murder victim, which turned out, in fact, not to be a Ripper killing, but rather the work of a copy-cat killer in the seedy pornography industry who was making a snuff-film.

Series 2 premiered on October 28, 2013, and 6.45 million curious watchers headed to the year 1890, when the detectives bumped into a cop-on-cop killing in Chinatown, where opium runs rampant and something new called heroin was being widely used. The elephant man, John Merrick, was their only witness to what ended with a cop impaled on an iron fence.

Series 3 premiered on BBC Two on July 31, 2015, and took 4.92 million viewers to the year 1894, when locomotives, robberies, and brothels were all the rage in Whitechapel, and the star team was reforming their ranks to get down to some solid police works.

Series 4 premiered on BBC Two on August 22, 2016, with 4.44 million viewers being whisked away to the year 1897 at the seaside town where retired and happy Inspector Reid was being begged to return to the division to aide in the investigation of a Muslim solicitor who’s throat was slit in the Whitechapel docks.

Series 5 released in full on Amazon UK on October 12, 2016, and there are no viewership numbers to report due to Amazon being an exclusive subscription service. This new season brings viewers to the edge of a new century; the year is 1899 and Inspector Shine has returned to antagonize Inspector Reid, and betting on fight dogs is all the rage in Whitechapel, until the pack gets loose on the streets.

When and Where Will Series 5 Air?

Since all six episodes of series 5 were released on October 12, 2016, on Amazon UK, with no official announcements about premiere dates on BBC or BBC America yet, speculation can be based on how series 4 was released: Amazon UK premiered it on January 15, 2016; six months later, BBC America premiered it on July 28; a month after that, BBC Two premiered it on August 22. If we apply that same math to series 5: Amazon UK premiered it on October 12, then perhaps BBC America will have it airing sometime before the summer of 2017.

Series 1-4 are available to download or stream from Amazon, Vudu, iTunes, Google Play, Xbox, and Sony PlayStation. With a potential long delay before the final series will be available on BBC channels or any of these download and streaming services, there’s plenty of time to schedule a binge-watch session
