S1 Started September 6, 2016

Queen Sugar is an upcoming American television drama series slated to premiere on September 6, 2016 on the cable channel OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Created, directed, and executive produced by Ava DuVernay (Spiderman 2 and Selma), alongside network owner Oprah Winfrey, there series will be based on the novel of the same title, penned by Natalie Baszile.

The series is based on the lives of two sisters. Nova Bordelon portrayed by Rutina Wesley (Trueblood and Hannibal) a tough as nails, no holds barred journalist as well as activist from the area of New Orleans. And Charley Bordelon, portrayed by Dawn-Lyen Gardner (Unforgettable and Star Wars: The Clone Wars), who uproots her life in Los Angeles, and with her young teenage son in tow moves back to her home in Louisiana to take over the running of her birthright—an 800 acre sugar cane farm. Recently announced to have been added to the cast list as leading roles were Kofi Siriboe (Selma and Straight Outta Compton) and Omar Dorsey (Selma and Django). Added series regulars will include Tina Lifford (Parenthood and Hostage) and Bianca Lawson (Rogue and Witches of East End) and Greg Vaughan (Days of Our Lives and General Hospital). Although it had previously been announced that, the Queen Bee Oprah Winfrey would also have a recurring role in the series that has since been retracted. It was later announced that her role would remain behind the scenes, rather in front of the camera.

With the current success of the OWN network, it has continued to grow and expand its series schedule by leaps and bounds. Committing itself to quality programming, the channel has seen a steady increase in viewership and followers. This new series will most certainly add another jewel to the channels already impressive crown. It also helps with the fact that the world famous and widely admired Oprah Winfrey has attached her name to this project. That is sure to bring with it her many hordes of fans and followers to see what all the fuss is about. Also sure to follow the series to television are the loyal fans of the original publication that the series is based on. What will be interesting, and the thought I am sure in every mind of the book fans is how the story will play out on screen. The fans are sure to ponder on whether Oprah and company will stay true to the original story, or will they cave into conventions and fell the need to take the plot in a totally different direction. Knowing that, more often than not, that is how these book-to-television ideas play out, we can only wait and see in September. One thing that is almost a positive, the story will be both uplifting and riveting. That seems to be a trademark for any project that Oprah attaches her name, and her reputation to.

As of this writing, the tentative premiere date is listed as September 6, 2016. Although, it is of note to mention that there is no slated time listed anywhere to be found. Other than what is mentioned above, there is not much available to be found about this new series. One would assume that even though it has been announced that the thirteen episode of season one is well underway, they are not committing a viewing time for the first episode, as of now. That information is sure to come shortly.
