BBC One is yet to decide on the future of the Ordinary Lies for Season 3

Release Date of #OrdinaryLies S3: To be announced

These lives are much more than ordinary!

Ordinary Lies is a hit anthology series on BBC One. Entering its second season now, this one is set in Cardiff, Wales, whereas season 1 was in Manchester, England.

Each season takes place at a different working environment, with completely different characters, although some personality types definitely overlap. Season 1 was at a car dealership called JS Motors, and season 2 is at a sporting goods mega-store called Coopers Outdoors.

What each season has in common is the seemingly ordinary people who work at these places. At the offset, nobody would think these employees were anything but normal, and as each season progresses, their lies, deceit, drama, and hidden secrets are revealed.

Each episode is told from the point of view of a different main character, exposing their personal lie or secret, with other characters that support the main story being told. This is a very clever method of storytelling, as each episode brings a new view to the same environment, like stepping into someone else’s shoes each week.

Critics and viewers talk about the format.

IMDb voters rank OL at 7.5 out of 10 with over 600 votes cast. Viewer comments are reporting mixed sentiments, with many being annoyed by some of the forced situations and typical responses. There is no resolution at the end of each episode, but that may be part of the format of the show.

Those who dislike the series, heavily dislike the format. Critics have commented that there is little opportunity for viewers to connect with characters when the point of view is changed up each week, and the lies that are revealed are not ever fully revealed and never resolved; leaving viewers hanging is not a great way to gain positive reactions.

On the other hand, these negative points are seen as positives by viewers who are tired of the same boring format of most drama series. They see this show as fresh and interesting, not empty and tired.

Can viewership remain high for season 2?

Season 1 received an outstanding viewership following. The debut episode earned 6.34 million viewers, and the second episode actually rose to 6.90 million viewers. The last four episodes held steady, pulling in between 6.2 and 6.4 million viewers. Those were such amazing numbers that it was renewed for a second season by BBC.

Season 2 premiered on October 18, 2016, and although official viewership numbers are not available for this new season yet, it is sure to attract similar numbers. BBC has not made any announcements about a third season or beyond, nor have they said anything about cancelation neither.

#OL airs Monday nights at 9pm on BBC One.
