NBCUniversal is flooding the Asian television market with reality shows, thanks to a new rise in popularity. Following the Kardashian style formula, they have started a trend in an entire region based off of vapid, scripted reality television. And don’t try to deny you don’t watch one, because everyone watches at least one!
The Launch of It Girls will mark familiar territory for the studio on Monday, as they try to corner the market before it gets too crowded. It Girls will be set in beautiful Manila, and star four Asian celebrities. Liz Uy, Isabelle Daza, Solenn Heussaff and Georgina Wilson. Wilson is of course the former Asia’s Next Top Model host, so is the most recognizable out of the bunch.
This is a pretty impressive list of stars for the show as they will start off with a lot of eyeballs. The four women together already have an established social media presence, something that gives them a boost that almost hits 20 million unique fans. Even when the Kardashian’s started they didn’t have a strong social media presence, only notoriety from Kim’s exploits. Reality television also wasn’t as strong as it is now, which is exactly why It Girl will skyrocket in the ratings. They have very little competition in their region, and a lot of powerful people want to see them succeed.
Keeping Up With The Kardashians is still a big hit in Asia, and with the future of the show in jeopardy, new localized shows like It Takes Gutz to Be a Gutierrez have started to collect new fans well into its fourth season. Facing Up to Fazura will be released during the same time as It Girl, leading many to believe that the Asian reality craze is just getting started.
Will It Girl be the best reality show in Asia? What do you think of the rise in popularity of reality television?
