Guillermo del Toro and children’s animated series isn’t something that usually goes in the same sentence. But the famed director has got a DreamWorks backing and a greenlight from Netflix to hire Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Anton Yelchin as voice actors for the show. The show will premiere in 2016, and is being billed as a family event series. Del Toro has been excited about the progress and made an announcement at the Annecy Animation Festival in France. The demographic they are aiming for is wide, and it may very well be one of those cartoons that even reaches adults as much as kids.
Trollhunters is about two worlds that collide to create an adventure unlike any other. The suburb of Arcadia is the home to hero Jim and his best two best friends. Jim discovers a secret battle taking place underneath Arcadia between the bad and good trolls, and after finding a magical amulet, he goes on an adventure unlike any other. Joining him is one of the good trolls Blinky, who is voiced by Kelsey Grammer. The evil troll who gives chase to the adventurers is Bular, and he is voiced by Ron Perlman.
This is an interesting side project for all of the actors involved, and for Del Toro it is a huge right turn from his usual horror movies. The production team is filled with a lot of experienced producers, so expect a well-directed animation with an easy to follow arc. No one is expecting this to be the best show on Netflix, yet it could be entertaining enough that it sparks similar projects. Del Toro is trying something a little different, and it may very well work.
Is this a good pickup for Netflix? Or should they be going after established series that are looking for new networks?
