The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has inspired yet another piece of media, now with Emerald City coming to NBC on January 6th. Like all fairy tales that have come out in the past couple of years, there is a dark and gritty tone to the underlying plot. In fact they are making so many changes that it is looking like a toned down version of the video game Fallout with Dogmeat as the costar.
Emerald City follows an older Dorothy Gale and her K9 police dog companion as they navigate through the world of Oz. But this isn’t your grandmothers Oz, and it is a land of magic, bloodshed and competing clans. There are a lot of stars in the series, and unlike the book it was based off of, the Wizard is taking more of a direct role. Vincent D’Onofrio will play the Wizard, and will be surrounded by stars like Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Joely Richardson, Ana Ularu, Adria Arjona and more. A trailer was just released that shows the magic of the entire series, and it looks big! Not like network television big, but Game of Thrones big! Created by Matthew Arnold, fans can expect this series to be one of the better ones on the network next year.
Amazingly the series was on the backburner after the network decided that showrunner Josh Friedman had a completely different vision. After the show brought aboard David Schulner as showrunner, things took form once again and it became the show that everyone wanted. With Tarsem Singh set to direct all ten episodes of the first season, there is a good chance that the trailer will be exactly what the show will be for the remainder of the season.
Will this be a show worth watching in 2017? Or has the dark fairy tale genre worn out?
