Duff til Dawn is an American reality culinary series that originally premiered on the Food Network, which originally premiered on January 25th, 2015. The famous cake baker, Duff Goldman, hosts the cooking series as he invites talented and professional bakers in to his own bakery for “after-hours culinary competitions”. The creator of the series is Doug Mirabello. Authentic Entertainment produces the series.
Can you tell me more about the premise of the show?
Each show follows the same general format. In each episode, there are two teams of cake decorators who square off against each other to “test their skills and creativity in challenges that task them with making over-the-top cakes”. There is a distinct theme in every episode. The themes in the different episodes including everything from monsters to space and the planets, and the cakes designed must be based off of these specific themes.
Duff Goldman hosts the show, but he has had various guest judges on the show thus far including Haylie Duff (yes, this is Hillary Duff’s sister) and Kevin Smith, who is a writer and a director. In each episode, the guest judge determines who the winning team is. The ultimate prize for the winning team is a golden whisk.
Can you tell me more about the host of the show, Duff Goldman?
Jeffrey Adam “Duff” Goldman is an American pastry chef and television personality. Duff’s day (and probably morning and evening job) is working as the Executive Chef at the Baltimore based bakery, ‘Charms City Cakes Shop’. Previously, his shop was featured on the Food Network’s reality television show, Ace of Cakes. Duff also opened up a west coast based cake shop, ‘Charm City Cakes West’ in Los Angeles. Much of Duff’s famous cake work has also been featured on Food Network Challenge, Iron Chef America, Oprah, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Man vs. Food.
What do fans have to say about the show?
Reviews for the first season of the show were mixed. One fan in particular felt that much of the show was staged and commented on the episode, ‘Pretending to Plan the Cake’. This fan commented, “Drives me nuts that they call it a mystery theme and then spend time watching the decorators discuss and plan their cakes when it’s super obvious they already have these plans. In one episode, they ‘decide’ to make an apple monster with apple-flavored cake. In another, they get ‘surprised’ with a sea/ship theme, but the cake they brought already had a ship baked in”. Clearly, that fan is skeptical!
Will the show be renewed for a second season?
We have not heard an official renewal announcement or cancellation for this series for a second season. The show is not currently airing on the Food Network, the last new episode of the series aired on March 5th, 2015. However, there has been no official cancellation notice- so there is a possibility that the show could still come back for another season. Reviews were mixed during the first season, but overall, most fans do seem to be a big fan of the cake industry and cake decorating, so we would guess the chances are about fifty-fifty right now that the show will
