Created as filler between 2010’s hit computer animated movie How to Train Your Dragon, and its 2014 sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, Dragons is a Cartoon Network series in the same style. The show first aired in 2012, and while DreamWorks had worked with Nickelodeon in the past, this was their first partnership with Cartoon Network. It follows a group of Vikings, dragons and their dragon riders, as they face the perils of their world while trying to maintain harmony between the groups. The show features several dragons, villains and a whole lot of action, and has earned itself several Annie Awards and a Primetime Emmy among several other nominations.

How many seasons are there so far and what are they about?

In 2012, the first season of the show, the series was subtitled Riders of Berk. This season, the Dragons, Riders and Vikings start to learn to live in harmony. They encounter many unusual circumstances throughout the season and learn who they can trust and who they can’t. The second season, Defenders of Berk, aired from 2013 to 2014. The characters continue to find themselves in weird situations, and are introduced to new antagonists who send them all for a loop. Some characters encounter health issues, but they work together to overcome them. The next batch of episodes was titled Race to the Edge, and is split into seasons three and four, in 2015 and 2016, which moved from Cartoon Network to Netflix where each season is aired as a batch.

Who are some of the main characters?

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the main character and is one of the strongest at the dragon training academy. He has a prosthetic limb and has a dragon named Toothless with a prosthetic fin, both as a result of an accident in How to Train Your Dragon. Toothless is a rare Night Fury dragon, and is fast and intelligent. The two are very close, and because he has such a close relationship with his dragon, he is able to communicate well between the humans and dragons. He has several friends, including Astrid Hofferson, Fishlegs Ingernman and Snotlout Jorgenson, each who bring a different talent to the table to make sure the training academy always runs to the best it can.

What’s on the horizon for the show?

After the conclusion of the fourth season, the end of Race to the Edge, the riders find their island home destroyed. With two more seasons officially announced for release on Netflix, there will be plenty for the Riders and Dragons to do, including learning who is trustworthy and how to make their home feel secure and safe again. While the show has been consistently darker than the movies, it seems that things are just getting worse and they may just have to wage a war on the Vikings for having caused so much destruction. They need a new plan of attack and they are going to train their hardest to make sure that they can pull off what they hope to do.
