Season 24 of Dancing With the Stars debuted on March 20, 2017

S24 Started March 20, 2017

Iconic hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews are back on the screen for the 23rd season of Dancing With the Stars, the show that has America tapping their toes and shaking their legs as they enjoy all the elimination action that comes with this long-standing show. This season has contestant dancers from the realms of TV land, as well as Olympians, musicians, politicians and more. The stars dancing this season are Amber Rose, Vanilla Ice, Calvin Johnson Jr., Terra Jolé, Jake T. Austin, Ryan Lochte, James Hinchcliffe, Rick Perry, Jana Kramer, Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Maureen McCormick, Laurie Hernandez, and Marilu Henner.

The Show’s Premise is Fun and Simple
The ever-popular elimination style dance-a-thon has a fairly simple premise – a professional dancer is matched with a celebrity and the couples compete for the end prize. After each team performs their choreographed dance, judges assign points and the audience votes for their favorite. Each week, audiences watch as the dancers with the lowest total points are sent home. This pattern continues week after week, until there only one couple remains and are crowned champions for the season.

The show originally debuted in June 2005 and since then there have been more than 250 celebrities strutting their stuff on the stage with over 40 professional dancers accompanying them. With nearly 400 episodes to date, the shows popularity is only growing.

Twirling into The New Season
Season 23 tip-toed onto screens September 12, 2016, with a 2-hour premiere earning a 2.6 demo rating with 13.66 million viewers checking out the new dance moves.
These numbers are a huge improvement over last season’s premiere which came in at 1.5 with around 9.5 million viewers.

Despite such high viewership numbers, voters on IMDb still rate the show a low 4.7 out of 10 with over 8,000 votes. Overall, Americans seem to really love this dance-off series, and can’t wait to see their favorite stars coated in glitz and glam, flashing under the bright lights of the dance stage.

Security Breach Footage Released
The most exciting buzz about season 23 surrounds the controversial decision of DWTS casting the12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte after his summer-time scandals in Rio. There was an incident with Lochte and his team when they were caught in a hugely scandalous lie, where they drunkenly said they were robbed at gunpoint. Not only did this news saturate the TV news, it tarnished the US Olympic team’s reputation, being that national Olympians are supposed to represent the best in the nation, and this is not something patriotic citizens take lightly.

Two audience members stormed the stage as Lochte and partner Cheryl Burke received their critiques during the premiere taping. Security in the studio captured the men who jumped on stage, but there were four others in the crowd joined in on the protest, all of them wearing t-shirts with Lochte’s name inside a null symbol. Home audiences didn’t get to see the incident during the show as it was edited out for the premiere airing, but ABC released the footage after the DWTS premiere.

One of the men arrested for the stunt said their intent was to “get the message out that Lochte is a coward, a liar and, under Brazilian law, a criminal.” They were officially charged with the low-penalty minor crimes of jumping onto a stage and disrupting a performance.

Whether or not their stunt will affect security measures at future tapings is uncertain, and it’s hard to tell if the released footage of the stage-storming helped or hurt ratings in the following weeks. Lochte made a point to thank his cast-members on Instagram for sporting pro-Lochte t-shirts with hearts replacing the null symbol. No publicity is bad publicity.

More Seasons to Dance With
With strong initial viewership this season, a great line-up of celebs and pros, and the news-worthy protest buzz, there is no reason #DS won’t see a season 24.

DS airs Monday nights at 8/7c on ABC, and streams of previous episodes from season 23 are

on and HULU.
