Colony is an American drama and science fiction series airing on the USA cable network. It was created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal. The series stars Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies. The premiere of the first season actually came as an online preview release of the first episode on USA’s web site, on December 15, 2015, which followed the launch of a game like web site that was used to help promote the show. The official broadcast television premiere of the series finally happened on January 14, 2016. Very quickly, only a month after the show was introduced to audiences, USA Network renewed the series for a second season on February 4, 2016.

In the near future, in Los Angeles, California, Will and Katie Bowman (Holloway and Callies) live with two of their three children in a state of military occupation, under a regime known as The @Colony Transitional Authority. The @Colony Transitional Authority is part of a larger extraterrestrial invasion force that are referred to throughout the show as “The Hosts” or “The Raps”.  These alien forces have built a giant wall around the central part of Los Angeles, reaching over 20 stories tall and measuring several meters thick. The same fate has befallen many other large cities and population centers around the world. These newly confined areas are known as “blocs”. It is evident from damage that shows on streets and buildings that there was an armed conflict of some kind before these blocs were established. The show’s characters refer to this part of the storyline as “the arrival”.

Although Alien forces are in control in #Colony, the occupation forces that are seen are always humans. They resemble a militarized police force, dressed in red and black uniforms and carrying automatic weapons. Known as “The Proxies”, these forces have been nicknamed “the red hats”, and sometimes called, rather bluntly, “the collaborators”. The red hats appear to be staffed mostly by former members of the US Homeland Security department and are sometimes still referred to in that way.

Control over the population is maintained strictly and harshly. Life in the colony is restricted by many new rules and regulations such as curfews, which one can be shot for breaking, a ban on any motor vehicles not for official use, frequent identity checks at checkpoints and more. Those found to be not following any of the new rules are put into slave labor at a location known as “The Factory”, if they are not outright executed. The new alien hosts even decide which medical conditions are worthy of treatment and which will be allowed to run their course and kill off what they consider to be weaker parts of the population.

The series begins telling its story about a year after the arrival. The Bowmans are searching for their middle child, Charlie, who was separated from them during the conflicts prior to the occupation. Will is forced to work for the red hats, under threat that his family will be sent to the factory if he does not. He is charged with helping to locate members of the resistance. What Will does not know is that his wife, Katie, is a member of the resistance and is using her husband as an insider source of information.

Although some of the devices used in the storyline for #Colony have certainly been seen before in other “aliens take over the world” style science fiction movies and shows, the series is done quite well and manages to hold attention throughout each episode. One critic from an online review site probably put it best when he said, “Colony offers an engaging enough narrative, a few scares, and an overall good time, even if none of it is particularly original.” While reviews have not been of the highest order, they have leaned towards the positive side, indicating a

fairly good reception for the show so far, with potential for some improvement.

It will be interesting to see what the producers do with the show over the second season. There is certainly potential to make something good if the creativity is there. If the people behind the scenes can craft the storyline into something a bit more original, there could be a large and dedicated audience waiting for them in the not so distant future.

Colony is taking no prisoners in its season 2 return on January 12th. The USA original series is breaking the mold once again, and it’s easy to see the LOST touches through each episode!
