‘Call the Midwife’ Gets 3 More Seasons!

Well this was unexpected! The long running British drama just got renewed for three more years! BBC One seems to be a bit stricter when it comes to keeping their best shows under contract, dropping the whopping renewal to ensure series 7, 8 and 9 will remain on the station. This also affects the PBS deal which airs the show in the US. Along with the renewal, a Christmas special is always included.

Call the Midwife is about a team of midwives and nuns in the 50’s and 60’s that work in London. Based off of Jennifer Worth’s memoirs, the show has gained a massive following and is consider by many to be better than Downton Abbey. The story has been solid for all of the years it has been on air, although there has been a hit to the cast every now and then. The biggest hit came with Miranda Hart leaving due to becoming a huge star. She played the character Chummy Noakes, and while it is an ensemble show, she provided a lot of humor where needed. Even with her departure the show has managed to find itself and keep moving forward, something that all great shows have to do.

The interesting thing about Call the Midwife is that the synopsis isn’t exactly thrilling, but what viewers get when they tune into the series is something special. So special, that it has racked up a lot of major awards and maintained a growing viewership. With all of the great stories being told on the show, having it around for three more years is inspiring, and shows that networks do recognize what the viewers want. Now let’s see if they can somehow get Chummy to make an appearance!

What do you think about the multi-season renewal? Is this series better than Downton Abbey?
