What do you get when you put together an amazingly talented designer and builder and the beautiful coastline along with beach homes greatly in need of a facelift? Big Beach Builds, the perfect pilot for a home improvement show, sure to inspire builders, beach homeowners and dreamers alike. Multi generation builder and designer Marnie Oursler founded her own business in Delaware in 2007 called Marnie Homes. Since that time, she’s built a solid reputation for her incredible design, building and renovation work, particularly around beach homes. She’s recognized as a 40 Under 40 professional in the building community and is a past recipient of the Gold Stevie Award, which recognized her as a leading female entrepreneur.
The DIY Network approached Oursler with the idea for the show. She was thrilled with the opportunity to take her skills to a television audience. The pilot took over five weeks to film and often up to sixteen hours per day. It was produced by Leopard USA. The pilot episode features a 1930s beach cottage on Bethany Beach in Delaware. The cottage was in desperate need of structural and aesthetic repairs. Oursler and her team got to work and transformed this beast into a beauty.
Oursler started out in real estate and learned to appreciate beautiful homes. She couldn’t afford a builder so she decided to build her own first home. She renovated it and sold it ten months later at a profit of more than $100K. She’d found her passion. “The creative process is so critical to the final product and can make all the difference when it comes to determining the home’s valuation” says Oursler.
She further states, “ I think it’s fun for anyone to see the process of taking a beach home and giving it new life. I love getting people excited about their new home and life on the shore!” Hence, her preference for the BBB. Although she builds all types of homes, she prefers the beach homes for their casual flair and fun, open outdoor spaces.
The pilot episode premiered on the DIY Network on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 12:00 Noon. Critic’s reviews and ratings were not available at the time of this writing. However, a fan site, Pretty Famous, gave the show 5 stars. As of now, there are no viewings available on the network or on alternate sites, and no plans to release a DVD at this time.
The exciting news is that Oursler announced in a press release in March that the network has decided to turn #BBB into a series. Oursler had this to say about the opportunity, “I am so excited to embark on this new adventure that combines my love for building with reality television. I can’t wait to share my love and passion for building beach houses with an audience who loves to see that it is possible to take an old beach home and make it new again, all while preserving its charm.”
At the time of this writing, the network has not announced when the filming will be underway or when audiences may anticipate the series to premiere. However, DIY
