A good scary movie is hard to find, as they usually tend to be full of jump scares. Even movie series like Saw depend more on shock value horror rather than being truly terrifying. A good scary movie will create an atmosphere that will make you question life around you. Recent classics like The Babadook will even make you afraid to purchase a specific book- it is all about making you believe their fantasy has a connection to your reality, no matter how small. But what happens when you move beyond scary movies and go into urban legends? What happens when a person 100% believes the fantasy and it distorts their reality?
HBO will dive deep into the psyche of the Slenderman legend, and answer a lot of the above questions. Their new series Beware the Slenderman is a true crime documentary that will cover the real life stabbing of a 12 year old girl by two of her classmates. And why did they stab a 12 year old classmate? Because they believed that Slenderman was real, and he had to be appeased. The series already has a trailer out, and even though it is a true crime documentary, it is scary as heck.
Look for the premiere on January 23rd to attract a lot of viewers, mostly those that already followed the online story that started all of this. The legend of this character has grown to disgusting proportions, cranking out a video game and even several short films. Although the bigger he got the less scary the entire idea became, the real horror of this poor girl stabbed to death will haunt many people for the rest of their lives.
What is your favorite horror movie of all time and why? What would make this true crime series a hit for HBO?
