#BestFriendsWhenever is set in the Portland, Oregon area. The series follows two young girls, who are BFF’s. Cyd Ripley (portrayed by Bender) is living with Shelby Marcus’ (portrayed by Taylor) family, until her own archaeological parents return from a dig in Peru. A best friend is one you can rely on no matter what whenever you, or they, need help. But with Shelby and Cyd, their BFF status goes the extra mile in that they are there for each other wherever and whenever—as in whatever time or era they need each other. While working on a science experiment together in their neighbor Barry’s (portrayed by Kamp) science lab, that goes drastically wrong, the two girls quickly discover they have the ability to travel in time. They can travel the time stream whenever they choose, and at times when they had not planned to, just by thinking of the desired time and touching each other. With these new found abilities, the girls try to use the time traveling to their advantage, such as navigating through their troublesome times with family and school. The biggest advantage is how the new found talent helps Shelby in particular in dealing with her troublesome twin brothers Bret and Chet. The girls also find that they often have to travel back in time to try and fix past mistakes as well. But the best part is that they can go to the future, and see what will happen with both their BFF status and the world around them.
#BFW shows with a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on the IMDB site. The viewers who reviewed this series have numerous issues with it, and that is more than reflected in the IMDB rating as well. The first item they take issue with is the plotlines. They often state that they make no sense, contain multiple holes, and are confusing to follow along with. Also, the main concept in the series, the girl’s ability to time travel, is left to just be accepted for what it is. There is not real connection between how the process is presented, and how the viewer understands it. The reviewers also mention that in their opinions that the writing is very lacking, the special effects appear very low budget and cheap, and the humor is not really humor at all. They do not see the series at all funny as a comedy should be. Yet others have commented that the series seems too much like a “Bill and Ted” type adventure, but with females. Where they do draw a line is that the girls are so involved in the fun aspect of the time travelling that they do not take into consideration what their involvement may be doing to change things in the future, and that they a mucking around with things they just don’t understand.
BFW is currently still airing the remaining episodes of its second season. If you would like to catch them they are airing weeknights at 8p on the cable network the Disney Channel. Since the second season is still airing, there was not information found that confirmed or denied a renewal or cancellation of this series. However, if one were to look at the ratings and the viewer feedback, one could hypothesize that the chance of a third season is on shaky ground.
