You can now add the rebooted America’s Next Top Model to the safe list. The show gained over a million viewers when it premiered, and almost touched on two million when you combine the numbers from two airings. This news won’t excite a lot of people, but for viewers that may have been worried about the future of the franchise, this is a welcome distraction. VH1 is more likely to keep the show around after seeing these numbers, even if it did do a lot less than Martha & Snoops Potluck Dinner Party.
Part of the appeal was the new cast consisting of Rita Ora, Ashley Graham, Law Roach and Drew Elliott. The other part was a recent mini-controversy due to Danielle Brooks calling out the show for not having any curvy women. Brooks of course plays a major character on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. She went on a bit of a social media rant about the 24 contestants in the reboot not being representative of women worldwide. Brooks did congratulate the show on being diverse other than that, so it wasn’t all bad. Yet it was enough of a buzz to give the show some good numbers, albeit unintentional.
Plus size women in the modeling industry is still a touchy subject, even if they are more represented than ever. The show finally caved in and put a plus sized model on the show in the old incarnation, and even had a plus sized judge. With Tyra Banks behind the camera as an executive producer, it is unknown just how much control she has over the casting. When this season ends and the next one begins, they may have to make a slight tweak to the way the show searches for models.
What do you think of the show not having any plus sized models? Will they correct that in future airings?
